CeADAR was one of 21 partners on the ICOS Project from both industry and academia across Europe and was the project lead on the ICOS Intelligence Layer, a sophisticated suite of AI tools designed to bring intelligent automation, predictive capabilities, and enhanced efficiency to the Edge-to-Cloud continuum1.
CeADAR built the intelligence layer, coordinated its security and data management layers, and integrated them.
ICOS is focused on advancing computing systems architecture to meet the demands of data-intensive applications in edge and cloud environments. By enhancing performance, scalability, and efficiency, ICOS aims to enable seamless integration and operation of complex computational tasks, ensuring modern applications function optimally across diverse computing landscapes.
Objectives
-
Design of an intelligent meta OS for the continuum
-
Exploiting novel intelligent data and resource utilization methods
-
Enforce trustworthy yet open operation
-
Demonstrate the project outcomes in key relevant scenarios
-
Building an open innovation environment and fostering the creation of new applications in the continuum as well as the science and engineering community
Use Cases:
In-car Advanced Infotainment and Multimedia Management system (IAIMM)
The In-car Advanced Infotainment and Multimedia Management system (IAIMM) use case focuses on the main target to optimize the distribution of multimedia content so that high quality reception can be achieved even in low- connectivity situations while avoiding service interruptions. The service provides and enriches multimedia functionalities for planning, enjoying trips and visiting touristic sites. Its deployment architecture includes edge nodes to host rendering and preprocessing and more powerful cloud nodes.
Agriculture Operational Robotic Platform (AORP)
The Agriculture Operational Robotic Platform (AORP) use case optimizes farming with agro robots (Agbots). The use of Agbots for precision agriculture allows the development of processes on farms reducing operating costs, improves awareness of technology potential impact, digital competences, improves effective use of resources as well as reduces the amount of used plant protection products. To achieve these benefits, it is necessary to further develop digital and robotic systems based on data exchange ecosystems and services based on their semantic processing to provide knowledge and tools that will increase efficiency, ensure safety, and confirm product quality in the supply chain, while reducing costs and providing valuable information to farmers.
Railway Structural Alert Monitoring system (RSAM)
The Railway Structural Alert Monitoring system (RSAM) improves the railway monitoring process. Today the monitoring process is done by a special train, which can measure several key parameters of the railway system. However, this measurement is only taken every few months; in the remaining months, nobody knows what happens. The use of digital technology, such as IoT, aims to minimize the monitoring and maintenance costs by gaining knowledge of the status of key aspects of the railway infrastructure in real-time: rail tracks levelling, tensions and slope, surrounding areas settlements and falling elements, catenaries maintenance, cyber processes monitoring, etc.
Energy Management and Decision Support system (EMDS)
The Energy Management and Decision Support system (EMDS) use case focusses on the energy consumption in smart homes. Already consumers are investing in smart devices and energy storage to better manage their electricity consumption. Green energy is enabling the transition to smart homes through active participation in, and support of, ESBN’s SMART meter programme and the installation of solar PV, solar thermal, smart heating controllers and EV chargers through Airtricity Energy Services. The planned enablement of domestic services to support the distribution network will further drive uptake in smart, controllable domestic devices which can leverage payments for flexible energy usage.
Whitepapers:
ICOS Intelligence Layer
This whitepaper provides an overview of the ICOS Intelligence Layer. It details its architecture, its core modules, and the twofold approach to AI that serves both the underlying ICOS MetaOS and the specific needs of diverse applications. The objective is to illustrate how ICOS leverages AI to create an intelligent, adaptive, and efficient compute continuum, paving the way for a new generation of data intensive applications.
