The Irish Government announces the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO) supported by CeADAR
The NAIO will work with CeADAR to engage with business and organisations in Ireland around the role and potential of AI adoption.
Announced by Minister for Enterprise, Peter Burke, the NAIO represents a decisive step in Ireland’s digital future, providing a central authority to coordinate AI policy and align national efforts with key European Union initiatives such as AI Factories and the AI Continent Action Plan.
The NAIO will play a pivotal role in implementing the EU AI Act in Ireland, ensuring that AI is deployed in a transparent, trusted, and safe manner. As Ireland’s Centre for AI, CeADAR looks forward to working closely with the NAIO to support Irish businesses and organisations in adopting AI responsibly and effectively. As part of the Government of Ireland’s comprehensive Action Plan on Competitiveness and Productivity announced last week, this collaboration will be central to enabling companies to harness AI for competitiveness, productivity, and long-term growth.
CeADAR, funded by Enterprise Ireland and the IDA, is a not-for-profit centre for applied research and innovation in AI, machine learning, and data analytics. CeADAR’s mission is to explore, experiment, and build innovative AI solutions into processes and products, transforming productivity, competitiveness, digitalisation and sustainability, while ensuring regulatory alignment. Partnering with the NAIO strengthens this mission, giving Irish industry the tools and guidance needed to thrive in an increasingly AI-driven economy.
“The announcement of the National Artificial Intelligence Office comes at a pivotal moment for Irish industry. CeADAR looks forward to working with the NAIO to help businesses harness the potential of AI to drive competitiveness, productivity, and innovation. By combining strong regulatory oversight with practical support for adoption, Ireland is creating the conditions for companies to thrive in the AI-driven economy.” said Dr John Lonsdale, CEO, CeADAR
Ireland is already a recognised hub for AI innovation, hosting global leaders in foundational AI, including IBM and OpenAI. The NAIO will lead the development of a cross-government-high performance computing strategy, which will include quantum, AI and data infrastructure.
Together, CeADAR and the NAIO will ensure that Ireland fully captures the strategic opportunities of AI, positioning the country as both a trusted innovator and a global leader in the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
